Clarksville Celebrates completion of new main street

CLARSKVILLE, IN - Today the Tow of Clarksville reached a major milestone as part of the South Clarksville Redevelopment Plan. Town officials celebrated the completion of the long-awaited Main Street corridor with a ribbon cutting this afternoon. The event is the result of years of planning by the Clarksville Redevelopment Commission, the Town Council, and staff.
When Town officials set out to develop the South Clarksville Redevelopment Plan, one of the top priorities was to create a new Main Street corridor for the community. Unlike most other southern Indiana cities and towns, Clarksville has been without a traditional downtown or Main Street area. That all changed today with the opening of the new corridor, formerly known as Woerner Avenue.
“For nearly three centuries, Main Street USA has been a meeting place where folks from every walk of life gather to celebrate, to mourn, to create dreams, to overcome challenges, to turn political differences into strengths, to choose hope over fear and truth over doubt,” said Clarksville Town Council President Ryan Ramsey. “Main Street USA represents the best that this nation has to offer. Main Street, Clarksville, Indiana, will certainly be no different.”
Local developers are also hoping to build on the expected success of the new Clarksville Main Street area. The Cornerstone Group’s, Bolt + Tie mixed-use entrepreneurial community opened in May of 2021, making it the first to call Main Street home. Plans are also underway for Denton Floyd Real Estate Group to build a new $50 million dollar luxury apartment building known as Current 812.
“In the 20th century, this street was synonymous with jobs and the growing middle class, giving way to the Colgate Factory, Ashland Oil, and single-family homes,” said A.D. Stonecipher, Town Councilman and Redevelopment Commission President. “And now, after nearly two decades of lagging productivity, we finally unveil this street for the 21st century.”
The new Main Street stretches from Riverside Drive and the Ohio River to the site of the former Colgate Plant. The next step in the South Clarksville Redevelopment Plan will be to build a new street grid on the site of the former Ashland Oil property to make way for even more redevelopment in the area surrounding Clarksville’s new Main Street.
